ALSO: How to summarize docs with AI

 Welcome, AI enthusiasts.

If the copy is identical to the original, does the difference really matter? A startup called Writer has set out to prove that, in the AI industry at least, synthetic data can be just as effective as the real thing — while being much easier to come by.

TODAY IN AI

AI underdog outshines larger models in real-world tasks: The SF-based startup Writer unveiled a new LLM called Palmyra X 004 that it says is much better at interacting with external software and tools compared to Anthropic and OpenAI’s equivalents. Using synthetic data, it beats similar-sized rivals by close to 20% on Berkeley’s Tool Calling Leaderboard, which measures LLMs’ ability to act on their own.

Amazon unveils new AI tools at Delivering the Future event: Amazon’s Ring cameras will soon let you search for footage with AI (i.e. “Find the raccoon in the backyard last night”). The e-commerce giant also showed off a sprawling Louisiana warehouse that will use 10 times more robots than usual, plus an LLM-powered shopping assistant and an AI camera that shines a light on packages when they’re ready for delivery.

DeepMind researchers awarded Nobel for biology-focused AI platform: A day after a pair of AI pioneers earned the top honor in Physics, DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis and colleague John Jumper were awarded this year’s Chemistry Nobel Prize for AlphaFold2, a model that can predict the shape of proteins. Two million researchers have already used the platform to fight cancer, develop vaccines, and build new materials.

How to summarize docs with NotebookLM

NotebookLM lets you upload documents and turn them into notes, summaries, or even a podcast that explains what's going on in that document or file. Here's how to do it:

  • Go to NotebookLM's website.

  • Click on "Try Notebook LM".

  • Create a new Notebook and upload your documents.

  • Wait for a few seconds and it will generate a summary of the document and some prompts for further questions.

  • You can also convert the document into FAQ study guides, table of contents, timelines, briefing docs, and so on.

  • To turn the document into a podcast, click on "Generate" under audio overview and you are done.

  • Once generated, you can click play to listen to the podcast.

FROM THE FRONTIER

OpenAI expands its international reach

Source: OpenAI

OpenAI is filling up its passport and planting flags in five new cities. The Sam Altman-led startup announced it’ll soon open offices in Paris, Brussels, NYC, Singapore, and Seattle while continuing to staff up its current locations. To fuel the expansion, it’s likely dipping into funds from the record-breaking investing round it closed earlier this month.

OpenAI’s global growth could hint at a future where the AI industry is less concentrated in Silicon Valley. Some startups have already waved goodbye to California due to stricter AI regulations there — and the allure of fresh markets in other parts of the world. In Singapore, for example, the ChatGPT-maker wants to build an Asia-Pacific Hub that’ll work with local players to expand access to AI tools across the region.
